With very few exceptions gear is a focal point of the vast majority of RPGs, whether they are of the single-player or MMO variety. I guess the clothes really do make the man. Take the armor progression videos for The Old Republic, people (and by people, I mean me) salivate every time a new one is released.

As I’ve mentioned previously, and will likely mention again, most MMO development runs along the course of evolutionary as opposed to revolutionary. This is a formula that has worked for the RPG genre since the seminal days of table-top gaming which has inexorably proved that Darwin’s theories apply to more than just life. Taken in small bits it may be difficult to see the connections but as more pieces of the puzzle fall into place a pattern begins to take shape. Table-top wargaming gave way to table-top role-playing, which in turn gave way to online text-based MUDs. At some point a few brilliant people figured that the burgeoning world of computer graphics could add dimension (or two or three) to the world of wargaming and RPGs.
